What to sow now

October in Missouri

Leave the stems standing

Let seed heads stand for the goldfinches and leave stems for overwintering insects and stem-nesting bees. The median first freeze in St. Charles County is around October 18. Fall sowing continues.

  • Leave seed heads and stems standing through winter.
  • Keep unsown packets cool and dry until sowing time.

Ready to sow in October

Native plants 101

The month-by-month planting calendar

Gifts that come up every summer

Most of these wildflowers need a winter chill to sprout, so seed that arrives in December is right on time. The Winter-Sow Kit has six that sprout best after a winter outdoors, an illustrated sowing guide, plant markers and a gift box, and it ships free.

How it works

  1. Pick your numbers

Choose single packets, a kit or the whole series. Each packet is a numbered stamp in the Missouri Native Series.

  2. Sow by the postmark

Most packets say SOW DEC–FEB. Scatter the seed outdoors in winter, in jugs or on bare ground, and let the cold wake it up.

  3. Bloom in summer, and every summer after

Natives sleep the first year, creep the second and leap the third. Then they come back on their own.

Twelve numbers. Collect the series.

Every species is a numbered stamp, from No. 1 Purple Coneflower to No. 12 Golden Alexanders. Start with one, pick any four for $16, or get all twelve in a keepsake postal box.

Why Missouri natives

They belong here

Every species in the series grows wild in Missouri. Once established, many handle summer heat, dry spells and heavy clay.

They feed what lives here

Monarch caterpillars eat only milkweed. Swallowtails, checkerspots and native bees depend on native flowers too, and goldfinches eat the seed.

They come back

Most of the series are perennials, and the shorter-lived ones reseed. Sow once and watch the bed fill in over the years.
